Common Question Answer of Reversing Contactor

From: Quisure2019-09-27

1. How does a reversing contactor work?

A reversing contactor that to reverse a 3-phase motor using contactors, you just run one set of wires straight through one contactor, and a parallel set of wires through another contactor where you swap one set of wires. When this motor is engaged, the motor turns one way, and when this contactor is engaged, the motor rotates the other direction. Extended learning: (What is a contactor?)

2. How does a reversing motor starter work?

A reversing starter is designed to reverse shaft rotation of a 3-phase motor. This is accomplished by interchanging any two-line conductors that supply the motor load. The reversing magnetic motor starter features a forward and a reverse starter as part of the assembly. Electrical and mechanical interlocks are provided to ensure only the forward or the reverse starter can be engaged at any given time, but not at the same time.

3. What is a reversing starter?

A full voltage reversing starter is a 3 Phase motor controller with two motor contactors. Instead of using one contactor to open and close the power circuit to turn the motor on and off, it uses a forward and reversing contactor to control motor direction.

4. What is the function of auxiliary contactor?

The contactors are usually classified in load contactors and auxiliary contactors. The load contactors are with high switching capacity, what is the difference between a "regular" contactor and an auxiliary contactor?

The load contactor usually is used as the main contactor. It handles loads of about 600 A / AC1. Auxiliary contactors, on the other hand, are designed for switching currents of only up to 6 A. Among the auxiliary contactors count e.g. timer relays and safety relays. Basically, an auxiliary contactor is a regular (low-power) relay - but built like a "regular" contactor and when used together with another contactor it is called auxiliary contactor to clarify that it is not used for switching loads but has an activation/deactivation or control function instead - used to connect/disconnect a circuit. Therefore, auxiliary contactors usually only have auxiliary contacts and no main contacts.

5. What is the main function of contactor?

The load contactors are with high switching capacity, which usually is used as the main contactor. It handles loads of about 600 A / AC1. Extended learning: (What is the working principle of AC contactor?)

6. Why use an auxiliary contactor?

Basically, an auxiliary contactor is a regular contactor of like low-power relay, when used together with another contactor it is called auxiliary contactor to clarify that it is not used for switching loads but has an activation or deactivation or control function instead - used to connect or disconnect a circuit. Therefore, auxiliary contactors usually only have auxiliary contacts and no main contacts.
